Man United make a shocking transfer move to replace Andre Onana
As the summer transfer window enters its final stretch, Manchester United have reportedly stepped up their efforts to secure a new first-choice goalkeeper. The Red Devils are said to have renewed their pursuit of Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez, with just days left before the deadline on Monday, September 1, 2025.
Manchester United’s search for reinforcements between the posts comes after a shaky start to the season. Altay Bayindir has failed to impress in his limited Premier League appearances, while Andre Onana has faced mounting criticism following a string of high-profile errors, including his costly mistakes in United’s shocking Carabao Cup exit to Grimsby Town.
The need for a reliable, commanding presence in goal has pushed the club back toward long-time target Martinez, whose name has surfaced repeatedly in United’s scouting reports over the past two seasons.
According to The Sun UK, United have now made a fresh approach for the 32-year-old Argentine, who has established himself as one of the Premier League’s standout shot-stoppers since joining Villa from Arsenal in 2020.
Martinez’s future has been the subject of speculation since the end of last season, when he appeared to wave goodbye to the Villa faithful. Despite signing a long-term deal in 2023 that runs until 2028, interest from top European clubs has not died down, with United once again positioning themselves as the most serious suitor.
The Argentina international, who played a crucial role in his nation’s 2022 World Cup triumph, missed Villa’s opening-day defeat to Newcastle due to suspension but returned in the 1-0 loss to Brentford. His leadership, big-game mentality, and penalty-saving heroics remain highly valued at Villa Park, but United’s renewed interest could test the Midlands club’s resolve in the final hours of the window.
This isn’t United’s first attempt to lure Martinez to Old Trafford. Earlier in the summer, ESPN reported that Martinez was open to a move to Manchester, keen to take on the challenge of becoming the club’s new No. 1. The Red Devils even lodged a loan offer, which Aston Villa rejected outright. Now, with the clock ticking, United may be forced to return with a more serious bid if they want to seal the deal.
While Martinez is understood to be the priority, reports also suggest that United are monitoring Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens as an alternative option. At just 23 years old, the Belgian goalkeeper represents a younger, long-term project, though United are believed to prefer the experience and proven quality of Martinez as an immediate upgrade.
With the transfer deadline rapidly approaching, United’s goalkeeping situation has become one of the most pressing issues at the club. A successful move for Martinez would not only provide stability at the back but also send a strong statement about the club’s ambitions for the season ahead.
For now, all eyes remain on Villa’s stance and whether United are willing to meet the financial demands required to bring the World Cup-winning goalkeeper to Old Trafford before the window slams shut.
