Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has officially completed a move to Qatari outfit Al-Ahli Sports Club, marking a new chapter in his professional career.
The transfer follows his recent departure from Saudi Pro League side Al-Kholood and sees the Nigerian defender remain in the Middle East as he continues his football journey within the Gulf region after a short spell in Saudi Arabia.
At 31, Troost-Ekong is widely regarded as one of Africa’s most seasoned and dependable centre-backs. He joins Al-Ahli with a reputation built on leadership, composure, and defensive reliability. Over the years, he has amassed vast experience across several European leagues, having featured in the Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Turkey, and England before making the switch to the Middle East.
The move comes months after Troost-Ekong stunned Nigerian football stakeholders by announcing his retirement from international duty with the Super Eagles ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Despite that decision, his wealth of experience at club level and his commanding presence in defence were reportedly major factors behind Al-Ahli’s decision to secure his signature.
A stint in the Qatar Stars League is expected to allow the former Super Eagles skipper maintain match fitness and competitive sharpness, as he continues to perform at a high level ahead of future international tournaments and crucial World Cup qualification fixtures.
