We have not been paid our money – Rasheedat Ajibade

Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade has revealed that the team is yet to receive the financial rewards promised to them by the Federal Government of Nigeria following their historic triumph at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), played in July 2025.

The Atlético Madrid forward made the disclosure during an Instagram live session, where she stated plainly that neither the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) nor the government had paid the pledged funds.

President Bola Tinubu had, during a grand reception for the team at the State House in Abuja after their 1–0 victory over Morocco in the WAFCON final, announced a generous reward package.

This included $100,000 for each of the 24 players, $50,000 for each of the 11 technical staff, a three-bedroom apartment for every player in the Renewed Hope Estate in Abuja, and the national honor of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) for all players and technical crew.

What did Rasheedat Ajibade say about the promised money?
Ajibade expressed her frustration over the delay, saying: “We’ve not received our money. They haven’t paid. Hopefully, they will pay.” She further revealed that other entitlements, including match bonuses, remain unpaid, describing the situation as a “work in progress.”

The Super Falcons skipper urged the authorities to speed up the payment process, stressing that the delay has been difficult as people regularly approach players for financial assistance. Despite her disappointment, she maintained optimism that the team will eventually receive everything owed to them.

Super Falcons’ WAFCON dominance
Nigeria’s Super Falcons remain the most successful team in WAFCON history, having lifted the trophy 10 times out of the 13 editions held so far. Their victories came in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2024. Remarkably, the team has a perfect record in WAFCON finals, winning all ten they have contested.

The delay in fulfilling the government’s promises has sparked conversations among fans and football stakeholders, with many calling for urgent action to ensure that the reigning African champions receive the recognition and rewards they deserve.
