Premier League statement on racial abuse towards Wesley Fofana
Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana has become the latest footballer to suffer racial abuse during and after a match.
The French center-back was targeted by some Arsenal supporters during Chelsea’s clash with the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, March 16, 2025. Fofana later shared screenshots of the racist insults he received on social media.
Speaking out against the abuse, Fofana called for urgent change and urged social media platforms to take action against offenders.
In his statement, he said:
“In 2025, stupidity and cruelty can no longer hide. It’s not just football; it’s not just a ‘game’ when some believe their skin color makes them superior to others. It’s time for change, for platforms to take action, and for everyone to take responsibility.”
The Premier League strongly condemned the racial abuse directed at Fofana, expressing disappointment over the incident and reaffirming its commitment to tackling discrimination.
“The Premier League is appalled by the abuse suffered by Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana after their match against Arsenal. We will offer our full support to Wesley and the club. We work with social media platforms and authorities to ensure that any individuals found guilty of abuse face the strongest possible consequences. Football is for everyone, and there is no place for discrimination in our game or wider society.”
This marks the second time Fofana has publicly addressed racist abuse, reinforcing his stance against discrimination in football.
