Super Eagles Drop Out of Africa’s Top Five in Latest FIFA World Rankings

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have slipped out of the top five teams in Africa in the FIFA World Rankings for September 2025, marking another dip in their continental standing.

In the global standings, Nigeria dropped one place to 45th position, despite recording almost the same points tally as in the previous edition. According to FIFA’s latest update, the Super Eagles currently sit on 1,483 points, just one point less than they held in July 2025.

The slight decline follows a run of mixed results during the latest international window, where the team recorded two wins, one draw, and two defeats. While the performances were enough to keep them steady in terms of points, they were not enough to prevent a drop in the rankings.

On the African continent, Nigeria is now ranked 6th, falling behind football heavyweights Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, Algeria, and Côte d’Ivoire. This underlines the competitive nature of African football, where consistent performance is needed to maintain a spot among the elite.

Meanwhile, at the global level, Spain reclaimed the number-one spot in the world rankings for the first time since 2014, overtaking reigning world champions Argentina. Another notable shift came from Slovakia, who made the biggest leap of the month by climbing 10 places to 42nd.

FIFA explained that the latest rankings were shaped by results from over 200 international matches, emphasizing how rapidly global standings can change with each game played.

For Nigeria, the drop is another reminder of their ongoing struggles with inconsistency, an issue that has haunted the Super Eagles in recent years. As the team prepares for upcoming international fixtures, the focus will be on regaining form, stabilizing performances, and climbing back into Africa’s top five.
