The race to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is getting more intense across Africa, with 54 nations competing for a chance to play on football’s biggest stage. The CAF qualification format has been designed to deliver both excitement and opportunity, as teams battle fiercely for glory.
Across the continent, nine groups, each containing six teams, are currently in action. The winners of each group will automatically secure their place at the 2026 World Cup — a historic expansion that increases Africa’s number of representatives at the global tournament.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has also announced details for the final play-offs, which will decide the last African nation to qualify. In a statement, CAF confirmed that the FIFA World Rankings for October will be used to determine seeding for the draw. According to the format, the top-ranked team will face the fourth-best, while the second and third-ranked sides will go head-to-head for a spot in the final.
When are the 2026 World Cup play-offs for Africa?
The play-offs will serve as a mini-tournament to decide which African country will advance to the intercontinental play-offs. The semi-final matches are scheduled for November 13, 2025, with the final to follow on November 16, 2025.
The winner of this stage will then move on to the intercontinental play-offs in March 2026, where they will compete against teams from Asia, South America, Oceania, or CONCACAF for one of the remaining spots at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
