16-year-old British boy took his life after being blackmailed by Nigerian scammers over n*de photos – Tragedy struck as 16-year-old Dinal De Alwis, a talented student and athlete from Whitgift School in Croydon, took his own life after falling victim to online blackmail.

The promising young footballer and rugby player, known for his academic excellence, had recently achieved A* GCSEs and embarked on his sixth form studies with aspirations of attending Cambridge.

Dinal’s life took a dark turn when he was targeted by a blackmailer on Snapchat, who threatened to share explicit photos of him unless he paid £100. Fearing for his life, Dinal left his family home and recorded a poignant video expressing his intentions to end his life.

His devastated father, Kaushallya De Alwis, revealed the heartbreaking details of the night Dinal disappeared, recounting the messages his son left for the family. Despite his academic achievements and sporting prowess, Dinal succumbed to the immense pressure and shame inflicted by the online extortion.

The blackmail, originating from Nigeria, unfolded in the form of explicit images sent to Dinal along with coercive messages demanding payment.

In response, Dinal, mistakenly assuming the pictures had already been disseminated, chose to end his life. Efforts by the police and the National Crime Agency to trace the blackmailer proved futile, highlighting the challenges posed by online perpetrators operating across borders.

Dinal’s father, grieving the loss of his caring and bright son, expressed profound pain and regret. He emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the dangers of online activities, especially for younger individuals who may underestimate the risks.
