Troost-Ekong Hero of AFCON 2023 for Super Eagles Set for Surgical Procedure – Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has reportedly landed in Finland for a minor surgical procedure following an injury sustained during Nigeria’s second Group A match at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Troost-Ekong, who played the full 90 minutes in that game, scored the decisive goal from the penalty spot in the 55th minute.

Sports journalist Fabrizio Romano shared that the PAOK defender will undergo surgery in Finland tomorrow to address a ruptured biceps femoris in his right leg. This injury forced him to sit out Nigeria’s final group match against Guinea-Bissau, but he made a triumphant return for the Round of 16 clash against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon.

Despite the setback, the 30-year-old stalwart went on to play every minute in the Super Eagles’ subsequent three matches. Notably, Troost-Ekong was recognized as the best player of the 2023 AFCON tournament.

While the surgery is expected to temporarily sideline him, the resilient defender is anticipated to make a comeback for Greek side PAOK Salonica towards the conclusion of the season.
