Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has officially announced his retirement from international football, drawing the curtain on a remarkable decade-long journey with the Nigerian national team.

The veteran defender confirmed his decision just weeks after Nigeria’s painful failure to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a disappointment that ultimately marked the final chapter of his international career.

Troost-Ekong’s departure signals the end of an era for the Super Eagles. Since making his senior debut in 2015, the Netherlands-born centre-back rose to become one of Nigeria’s most dependable defensive figures. Renowned for his calmness under pressure, tactical intelligence, and commanding leadership, Ekong became a pillar at the back and a true symbol of dedication to the national colours.

Over the years, he evolved into one of Nigeria’s most trusted leaders, guiding younger players and setting high standards with his professionalism both on and off the pitch. His influence went beyond just footballing ability, as he played a crucial mentorship role within the squad. Interestingly, reports suggest that Troost-Ekong may continue his association with the team in a non-playing capacity, with plans to support and mentor players, including possibly traveling with the squad to AFCON 2025 as a senior figure.

What Troost-Ekong Said About His Retirement

In an emotional farewell message, the former captain expressed his gratitude and pride:

“Honoured. Grateful. Forever a Super Eagle 🦅🇳🇬. Playing for Nigeria has been the greatest privilege of my life. The journey may end here, but my support never will. Here’s to the next chapter.”

As fans across the country and beyond come to terms with the news, Troost-Ekong leaves behind a legacy built on passion, resilience, leadership, and unwavering loyalty to the green and white. His retirement not only marks the conclusion of a distinguished personal career but also represents a key transition phase for the Super Eagles, as the team now looks toward rebuilding and preparing for future international challenges.
