Why Marcus Rashford might not play for Barcelona this season

Rashford’s La Liga Debut in Doubt Despite Bright Start at Barcelona

Marcus Rashford has hit the ground running since joining Barcelona, showing early promise under new manager Hansi Flick. However, his official participation in the 2025/26 La Liga season remains uncertain due to ongoing registration complications rooted in the club’s long-standing financial troubles.

After a disappointing 2024 season with Manchester United, which saw him loaned to Aston Villa in January for more playing time, Rashford made a surprise switch to the Catalan side during the summer transfer window. Barcelona have reportedly included an option to make the move permanent for £30 million.

In pre-season, the England international was deployed as a central striker, stepping into the role usually held by veteran forward Robert Lewandowski. Rashford wasted no time impressing fans, scoring his first goal in a friendly against Daegu on Monday.

Yet, despite the strong start, the 27-year-old may not be able to feature in competitive matches any time soon. According to reports, Barcelona’s financial instability continues to affect their ability to register new players under La Liga’s strict salary cap and financial regulations.

This is not the first time Barcelona have faced such issues. In 2024, Dani Olmo—another high-profile signing—experienced similar delays before the club managed to register him using a regulatory workaround. Now, Rashford finds himself in a similar situation, with his future hanging in the balance unless the club clears the necessary financial hurdles.

Manager Hansi Flick, who had initially pursued Nico Williams, eventually turned his attention to Rashford after Williams’ move collapsed due to—ironically—registration complications. La Liga president Javier Tebas later confirmed the breakdown of that deal, and a similar fate could await Rashford if Barcelona cannot free up enough space in their wage bill.

Despite these obstacles, Rashford remains keen on making his mark in Spain. The former United forward, who netted 138 goals in 426 appearances for the Red Devils, was reportedly eager to join Flick’s project and rejuvenate his career at one of Europe’s biggest clubs.

For now, Barcelona fans will be watching closely, hoping the club can resolve its financial constraints in time for Rashford to make his much-anticipated La Liga debut.
