Victor Boniface’s Fitness Worries Threaten AFCON 2025 Hopes

The fitness struggles of Super Eagles forward Victor Boniface have become a major concern for both his club and the Nigerian national team in recent months, casting doubt over his chances of being included in Nigeria’s squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Boniface, who is currently on loan at Bundesliga club Werder Bremen, has found it difficult to earn a regular spot in the first team due to ongoing fitness issues. Despite his undeniable talent and past performances, the forward has been battling to regain full physical condition since the start of the season.

According to Werder Bremen’s sporting director, Clemens Fritz, both the player and the club are aware of the situation and have already taken active steps to address it. Fritz explained that Boniface has shown great professionalism and willingness to put in the work needed to get back to his best form.

“We have clearly identified the issues together with Victor and are supporting him in every way possible,” said Fritz. “He accepts our support and wants to work on himself with extra training, physiotherapy, and a modified nutrition plan. We’re working closely with him to ensure he reaches his full potential again.”

Boniface’s career has seen its fair share of highs and lows. During the 2023/2024 season, he was one of the standout players in Europe, helping Bayer Leverkusen clinch their first-ever Bundesliga title under coach Xabi Alonso. His record was nothing short of impressive — 21 goals and 10 assists in 34 official matches, making him one of the most influential forwards in the league.

However, the following season didn’t go quite as smoothly. Boniface’s form dipped slightly, with 11 goals in 27 appearances, and his impact on the pitch was limited compared to his breakout season. The summer of 2025 brought even more challenges when Alonso left Leverkusen for another club, which ultimately opened the door for Boniface’s exit as well.

Unfortunately, his planned transfer to AC Milan fell apart after he reportedly failed a medical test, despite both clubs already reaching an agreement. The failed move was a major setback for the Nigerian striker, who had hoped to use the opportunity to revive his career in Serie A. Instead, he was later sent on loan to Werder Bremen in hopes of rebuilding his form and confidence.

At 24, Boniface remains one of Nigeria’s brightest attacking prospects. His power, creativity, and eye for goal have made him a fan favorite since breaking onto the scene. However, the current fitness concerns have become a stumbling block at a crucial point in his career.

As the 2025 AFCON draws closer, Boniface is determined to return to full strength and secure a place in the Super Eagles squad. He continues to undergo intensive training and rehabilitation, combining physical workouts with a special diet and therapy sessions designed to enhance recovery and endurance.

The striker’s goal is clear — to rediscover the form that once made him one of the most feared forwards in European football and to wear the Nigerian colors proudly once again.

If Boniface succeeds in regaining his fitness and confidence, it would not only boost his club career but also strengthen Nigeria’s attacking options ahead of the continental tournament. For now, both Werder Bremen and Nigerian fans will be keeping a close eye on his progress, hoping that the talented forward can overcome his challenges and make a strong comeback on the international stage.
