UCL: Everything Enzo Maresca said ahead of Bayern Munich clash
Chelsea Boss Enzo Maresca Speaks Ahead of Champions League Debut Against Bayern Munich, Reflects on Nicolas Jackson’s Exit
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has addressed the media ahead of what will be his first UEFA Champions League match as a manager, as the Blues prepare to face Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.
In his pre-match press conference, the Italian tactician spoke about the challenge of facing Bayern, the fitness of his squad, and former Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson, who joined the German giants on loan during the summer transfer window.
When asked about his approach to the match, Maresca stressed the importance of always fielding his strongest possible side, while acknowledging the injury and fitness concerns that have affected recent selections.
“We try every game, even against Brentford, with our best 11. Game by game you manage different problems. Last game Cole [Palmer] wasn’t fit to play 90 minutes, players like Estevao were out. Tomorrow we will try to put our best 11,” he explained.
Maresca was also quizzed about Nicolas Jackson, who left Chelsea in the summer following the arrivals of Liam Delap and João Pedro. The coach praised the Senegalese striker for his professionalism and contribution during his time at Stamford Bridge.
“I said the other day, I’m grateful, thankful to Nico [Nicolas Jackson] because if we achieved what we achieved last year, it’s because of all the players including Nicolas. I text him after he left the club telling him thanks for last season, wishing him all the best. He’s a good guy, was working well,” Maresca said.
He clarified that Jackson’s departure was a squad management decision, not due to any personal issues. “Nicolas Jackson left because we bought two strikers – Liam Delap and João Pedro. I think two is enough. Me with Nico? Personally, I didn’t have any kind of problem with him and I don’t. He’s a good guy, good professional who worked well with us.”
The Chelsea manager admitted that Jackson’s inside knowledge of the club could offer Bayern’s coach Vincent Kompany a slight tactical advantage, but downplayed its overall impact.
“There can be a small advantage [with Nicolas Jackson being in the Bayern Munich team after playing at Chelsea]. He [Kompany] can ask Nico how we work and play. He was with us for an entire season so knows how we approach games but at the end we will see,” he said.
Maresca will be eager to see his side bounce back in Munich after their disappointing domestic result against Brentford, as Chelsea look to kick off their Champions League journey under his leadership with a statement victory.
