Tinubu Deserves Two Terms Like Buhari – Presidency Defends President Amid Criticism

The presidency has stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, like any other Nigerian, is entitled to a second term in office—just as his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, served two terms.

This was made known by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, during an interview with Trust Radio. Onanuga emphasized that Tinubu’s right to seek re-election in 2027 should not be questioned based on regional or political sentiments.

He urged both politicians and ordinary citizens to prioritize national interest over personal or sectional ambitions, stressing the importance of unity and collective sacrifice for Nigeria’s progress.

“President Tinubu is a Nigerian. He deserves the same opportunity to serve two terms like former President Buhari. We must not jeopardize the unity and future of the country because of narrow political ambitions,” Onanuga said.

He also addressed growing criticisms suggesting that President Tinubu has marginalized the Northern region in appointments and infrastructure development. Dismissing these claims as baseless and politically motivated, Onanuga argued that such narratives are designed to incite regional division and undermine the president’s administration.

“It’s all political mischief aimed at weakening the presidency. There are infrastructural challenges all over Nigeria, not just in the North. It’s dishonest to single out the region for political purposes,” he stated.

Highlighting key appointments in the security sector as proof of inclusion, he pointed out that the National Security Adviser, the Chief of Defence Staff, and both Defence Ministers are all from the North.

Onanuga also cited improved security in previously volatile areas like Birnin Gwari and Igabi in Kaduna State, noting a personal experience: “I recently travelled by road from Kaduna to Abuja without any security incident. That journey was once considered highly dangerous. Things are changing.”

He warned against attempts by certain groups to pit the North against the South ahead of the 2027 presidential election, calling for restraint and a renewed focus on governance and national development.
