Fans were already eager to listen to her 11th studio album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” searching for hints about her personal life, while critics speculated about her next move. Then, Taylor dropped the bombshell on social media.

On Instagram, the star announced, “It’s a 2 a.m. surprise: ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ is actually a secret DOUBLE album. I’ve penned so much emotional poetry over the past 2 years and wanted to share it all with you.

So, here’s the second part of TTPD: ‘The Anthology.’ 15 extra songs. And now, the story isn’t just mine anymore… it’s all yours.”

The surprise double album includes new tracks like “The Bolter” and “The Black Dog,” alongside previously released songs such as “Fortnight,” a collaboration with Post Malone, and “Florida,” featuring Florence and the Machine.

Taylor Swift received praise for her vulnerability, with many noting that she showed a side of herself never heard before. Fans speculated that several songs may be about her breakup with British actor Joe Alwyn and a rumored brief romance with The 1975 star Matty Healy.

According to Rob Sheffield of Rolling Stone magazine, the album represents Taylor Swift’s deepest dive into personal expression yet.

He describes it as a cathartic confession, depicting the journey of a woman who believed she had a firm grasp on adulthood and mature relationships, only to discover she still has much to learn.

Sheffield suggests that this album is unexpected, despite Swift dropping numerous hints along the way. He highlights the surprise factor, indicating that even though clues were present, the full scope of the album’s depth was unforeseen.

Mark Savage, BBC’s music correspondent, characterized the singer as “bereft and bewildered” on her latest album.

He noted that Taylor Swift appears more vulnerable than ever before, showcasing a new level of emotional depth. Despite this, Savage commented that “The Tortured Poets Department” is not without its flaws, lacking a standout radio hit like “Anti-Hero” or “Shake It Off.”

However, he acknowledges Swift’s dominance in pop music, predicting that the album will still achieve massive sales despite leaking a day before its official release.

In contrast, Alexis Petridis of the Guardian awarded Taylor Swift’s album four out of five stars. While acknowledging its length as slightly excessive, Petridis lauded Swift as an “exceptionally talented writer.”

He emphasized the album’s depth and maturity, suggesting that it sets a high standard against which her peers pale in comparison.

Meanwhile, Dan Cairns of the Times offered a glowing five-star review, expressing his admiration for Swift’s craftsmanship. He described himself as “basking in the work of a writer at the very top of her game.”

Cairns acknowledged the evident turmoil reflected in the album but highlighted its overarching message of resilience and growth. He emphasized that while the journey depicted may be fraught with pain, the resulting healing, wisdom, and artistic expression come at a profound cost.
