Police arrest 50-year-old man for hacking Zamfara traveller to d3ath in Kebbi

The Kebbi State Police Command has arrested a 50-year-old man, Muhammad Wanzam, for allegedly hacking a traveller, Alhaji Babuga Muhammad, to d3ath in Bena, Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of the state.

The spokesperson of the command, CSP Nafiu Abubakar, who disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, October 30, 2025 said that the incident occurred when the deceased was on his way from Bena town to his village, Karaye in Bagega District, Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

According to Abubakar, the attackers blocked the road, ambushed the deceased near Malakachi village, and took him into a nearby forest, where deep machete wounds were inflicted on his neck.

“On October 16, 2025, at about 1800hrs, one Alhaji Babuga Muhammad, while on transit from Bena town, Danko/Wasagu LGA of Kebbi State, to his village, Karaye, Bagega district of Maru LGA of Zamfara State, on reaching a forest near Malakachi village in Bena district, a gang of hoodlums blocked and took him to the forest, and macheted him on his neck,” the statement read.

“On receipt of the report, the Divisional Police Officer, Bena, mobilised a team of policemen to the scene and evacuated the victim to the General Hospital, Bena, where a medical practitioner confirmed him d3ad.

“Consequently, one Muhammad Wanzam, m, aged 50 years, of Bena town, was reasonably suspected and arrested in connection with the case.”

During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to conspiring with an accomplice, identified as Nuhu Bena, who is currently on the run to perpetrate the crime.

Wanzam alos admitted to using a cutlass to hack the deceased without any reasonable cause.

“In the course of investigation, the suspect confessed to having conspired with one Nuhu Bena, still at large, to use a cutlass and machete the deceased without any reasonable cause. When his house was searched, one fabricated AK-47 rifle,  one Dane gun, two live ammunition, one magazine, and the cutlass used in committing the crime were recovered as exhibits,” the statement read.

The PPRO further disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Bello Sani, commended the DPO and his men for displaying professionalism and an intelligence-driven policing strategy in arresting the suspect.

Sani was said to have equally directed the DPO to transfer the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Birnin Kebbi, for further investigation with a view to arrest the fleeing suspect and unraveling their modus operandi.

In the same vein, the CP urged members of the public to always seek redress from the appropriate authorities when aggrieved, instead of resorting to self-help.

“CP Bello M. Sani also reiterated the command’s determination in safeguarding the lives and property of the good people of Kebbi State, appealing to the residents to continue supporting the Police operations by reporting suspicious movement to the nearest police station or other security agencies for swift response, please,” the statement added.
