Netflix Announces Minecraft Series – Netflix has announced the release of a new animated Minecraft TV series. The news was confirmed today (May 30) with a teaser clip showcasing the game’s iconic graphics alongside the Netflix logo.

The announcement coincides with Minecraft’s 15th anniversary since its release in 2009. The series promises to “feature an original story with new characters that shows the Minecraft world in a new light.”

A teaser highlights, “The best selling game of all time & the biggest streamer in the world are teaming up to bring you a brand NEW Minecraft Netflix animated series! News dropped at the Minecraft 15th year anniversary celebration. More updates to come.”

The show is a collaboration between Mojang Studios, the game’s original developer, and the animation studio WildBrain.

Additionally, a Minecraft movie adaptation is in the works, starring Jack Black, Jennifer Coolidge, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Matt Berry, and Emma Myers.

Jack Black recently confirmed his casting in the upcoming Minecraft movie with an Instagram post showing him reading “Minecraft Basics for Dummies,” captioned: “An actor prepares.”

The movie is directed by Jared Hess of Napoleon Dynamite fame, with a script by Chris Bowman and Hubble Palmer. An earlier adaptation by Peter Sollett was planned but never materialized. It was to follow a teenage girl and her unlikely group of adventurers who must save their blocky Overworld from the malevolent Ender Dragon.

The Minecraft animated series will stream on Netflix, while the movie is set for a theatrical release on April 4, 2025.

Minecraft, developed by Mojang Studios and released in 2009, is a sandbox video game that has become one of the best-selling games of all time. It was created by Markus “Notch” Persson and later acquired by Microsoft in 2014.

The game is renowned for its blocky, pixelated graphics and its open-ended gameplay, which allows players to explore, build, and survive in a procedurally generated 3D world.
