Manchester United’s Efforts to Replace Andre Onana Hit a Roadblock as Aston Villa Reject Loan Bid for Emi Martínez

Manchester United’s search for a reliable replacement for goalkeeper Andre Onana in the ongoing summer transfer window has reportedly suffered a major setback.

According to multiple sources close to the matter, the Premier League giants made an official approach to Aston Villa regarding a potential loan deal for Argentine international and World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez. The move was part of United’s contingency planning, as current first-choice goalkeeper Onana is expected to miss a portion of the upcoming 2025/26 season due to international duties with Cameroon.

However, Aston Villa are understood to have swiftly rejected the proposal, making it clear that Martínez is not available for a temporary switch. The Midlands club considers the 31-year-old a crucial part of their squad, particularly as they gear up for another competitive season domestically and in Europe.

United’s interest in Martínez is believed to have been driven by a desire to add top-tier experience to their goalkeeping unit—someone capable of seamlessly filling in during Onana’s absences. However, Villa’s firm stance has forced United to reconsider their strategy.

The Old Trafford hierarchy is now actively reassessing alternative options in the transfer market. According to insiders, the club is deliberating between two distinct profiles: either an experienced veteran who can provide immediate cover and leadership or a promising young goalkeeper who can be developed into a long-term asset for the club.

One name that has surfaced as a strong candidate is Arne Lammens. The young shot-stopper is reportedly on United’s radar due to his impressive performances, age advantage, and experience in European competitions, which align with the club’s vision of building a more sustainable squad for the future.

Despite the collapse of the Martínez deal, Manchester United are said to be moving quickly behind the scenes to identify and secure a suitable addition before the transfer window closes. The urgency stems from both Onana’s expected absences and a general need for stronger depth in the goalkeeping department.

With fan expectations high and internal discussions ongoing, all eyes will be on United’s next move in the market. Whether the club opts for short-term reliability or a long-term investment, the decision is expected to significantly shape the team’s readiness for the 2025/26 campaign.

The transfer window remains open for a few more weeks, giving United valuable time to finalize their goalkeeping plans. For now, the hunt continues—with increasing pressure to get it right.
