Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye is at the center of a growing controversy, with reports indicating he may face a four-year ban from international football due to allegations of sporting fraud.
The 25-year-old Udinese goalkeeper, who transferred from Watford in 2023, is under investigation by Italian football authorities following an incident during a Serie A match against Lazio on March 11, 2024.
Okoye allegedly received a yellow card in the 64th minute under suspicious circumstances. According to Football Italia, betting patterns surrounding that specific booking raised red flags—odds were reportedly set at 8/1, and the incident allegedly resulted in over €120,000 in winning bets.
Authorities believe the event may not have been coincidental. Okoye, along with three acquaintances, is accused of deliberately manipulating the game to influence betting outcomes—a serious violation that falls under the category of sporting fraud rather than just irregular betting.
Unlike typical betting violations, sporting fraud is considered a criminal offense in Italy and does not allow for plea deals or negotiated settlements.
If found guilty, Okoye could face a mandatory multi-year ban from football activities, including international duty with the Nigerian national team.
The case has now been officially referred to Italy’s disciplinary commission, signaling the beginning of formal legal proceedings.
This development comes as Okoye continues to face mounting criticism from Nigerian fans, who have expressed disappointment over his inconsistent performances for the Super Eagles in recent years.
