Why Djordje Petrovic Is Absent from Chelsea’s 2025 FIFA Club World Cup Squad

Chelsea supporters have been raising questions following the noticeable omission of goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic from the club’s squad for the upcoming 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. The Serbian shot-stopper’s absence has sparked speculation and concern among fans, especially considering his solid performances in recent months.

According to an exclusive report published by The Telegraph on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, Petrovic’s exclusion was not a decision made unilaterally by the club.

Instead, it was the player himself who requested to be left out of the travelling squad headed to the United States. Sources close to the situation revealed that Petrovic is currently at a career crossroads, seeking clarity about his long-term future at Stamford Bridge.

The 25-year-old goalkeeper, who recently impressed during his loan spell at Ligue 1 side Strasbourg, reportedly asked for guarantees about becoming Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper ahead of Robert Sánchez. With no such assurance forthcoming, Petrovic saw little incentive to participate in the Club World Cup while his future remained uncertain. Unwilling to settle for a backup role, he chose instead to focus on resolving his next move.

Strasbourg are believed to be keen on signing Petrovic permanently following his successful loan stint, while several Premier League clubs are also monitoring his situation. Given the interest from other clubs and the absence of a clear path to the No. 1 spot at Chelsea, both the player and the club agreed that it would be in his best interest to sit out the tournament and focus on determining his next steps.

Chelsea, for their part, were prepared to include Petrovic in the squad for the Club World Cup had he not opted out voluntarily. His decision comes at a time when the Blues are actively seeking to strengthen their goalkeeping department. The club has shown interest in acquiring AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan, reportedly offering £12.7 million for the French international. Maignan, who has only one year left on his current contract and has declined to sign an extension, is seen as a top target.

However, negotiations have hit a snag as AC Milan are demanding a higher fee of £25 million for Maignan’s services. With that deal yet to be finalized, Chelsea are moving forward with Robert Sánchez, Filip Jörgensen, and Mike Penders as their goalkeeping options for the tournament in the U.S.

In summary, Petrovic’s omission from the Club World Cup squad stems from his desire to secure a more prominent role elsewhere, rather than being sidelined in a competitive environment where his future remains uncertain.
