Governor Eno bans masquerade display in Akwa Ibom
Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Umo Eno has announced an indefinite ban on masquerade displays, citing rising attacks on residents by criminals hiding under the guise of traditional performances.
Speaking at a state function, the governor said the decision became necessary following a series of violent incidents linked to individuals disguising themselves as masquerades to terrorise communities.
“By my office as Governor of Akwa Ibom State, I’m issuing an order. Anyone caught will be arrested and tried. They have been using it to cause trouble in some local government areas,” he declared. He directed security agencies to enforce the ban without exception, saying, “I’m now as Chief Security Officer of the state, directing the Commissioner of Police and other heads of security agencies to arrest and prosecute anyone caught.”
The governor urged residents to prioritise peace and resist any activities that endanger public safety. “Let’s stop terrorising people. Let people have peace. All those I see when we’re driving, please let it be said it is hereby banned. No more,” he added.
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has in recent weeks raised concerns over what it described as “suspected criminal masquerades,” with Commissioner of Police Baba Azare confirming that several suspects have already been arrested and are currently facing prosecution.
