Everything to know about the Omah Lay and Rema album saga

Spread the love

Nigerian music star Omah Lay has ignited a heated conversation online after a surprising revelation surfaced from what many believe to be his burner account.

The multiple award-winning Afropop singer shared a series of private text exchanges with Mavin Records’ leading act, Rema, dating back to December 2023. The screenshots—posted under an alternate persona named “Story of an Angel”—gave fans a rare glimpse into behind-the-scenes conversations between the two hitmakers.

In the messages, Omah Lay and Rema appeared to discuss creative ideas, musical concepts, and the possibility of a collaboration. However, one detail in particular drew massive attention: a voice recording labeled “mara” sent by Omah Lay.

Following the chat screenshots, the Story of an Angel account referenced a media article that described Rema’s recent musical direction as falling under the so-called Mara sound. This coincidence has fueled speculation and divided fans, with many drawing connections to Omah Lay’s earlier claims.

Back in August 2024, Omah Lay openly alleged that his album concept had been stolen, forcing him to scrap much of his original work and re-record the project from scratch. The resurfaced messages and the ‘Mara’ reference have now reignited debates about originality, influence, and intellectual property in the Nigerian music scene.

Social media remains sharply split—some fans accuse Rema of drawing heavily from Omah Lay’s creative ideas, while others dismiss the claims as coincidental overlap in an ever-evolving Afropop soundscape. For now, neither artist has issued an official statement beyond what has been revealed in the alleged messages, keeping the controversy very much alive.

Did Omah Lay Accuse Rema of Stealing His Album Idea?

There has been no direct statement from Omah Lay explicitly naming the artist he claims stole his album concept. However, the caption of a recent post from his alleged burner account, “The Story of an Angel,” has fueled widespread speculation and drawn connections among fans—many of whom point towards his industry peer and former close friend, Rema.

The cryptic caption read:

“With love, well-being, and clarity, 🐐 has now healed and forgiven himself—both from this wound and from others still unknown to the public. ☀️🕊️ Previously, 🐐 had canceled all concerts and postponed the release of new music to focus on his well-being. This break lasted until the Brussels Festival on June 28, where he first appeared noticeably unstable. For the last three years, 🐐 has been a major force of innovation in the genre even without the release of new music. Now, with clarity, well-being, and peace of mind, 🐐 has resolved to spend the rest of his life using his ‘hobby time’ to inflict the exact same level of trauma he has endured—on his enemies and on anyone who will or has tampered with his craft, thereby threatening the survival of his family and loved ones. Clarity of Mind — The State and the Album.”

The post’s tone and references to a past creative “wound” have led many to recall Omah Lay’s August 2024 claim that his album idea was stolen, forcing him to re-record the project from scratch. Adding weight to these suspicions, popular producer Tempoe confirmed in an interview that Omah Lay’s original project had indeed been taken by another artist—though he, too, stopped short of naming names.

While neither Omah Lay nor Rema has publicly addressed the swirling rumours, the situation has kept fans on edge, eager to see if the matter will be clarified—or if the mystery will linger until Omah Lay’s next project drops.
