Egypt Qualify for 2026 FIFA World Cup After 3–0 Win Over Djibouti

The Pharaohs of Egypt have officially booked their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a commanding 3–0 victory over Djibouti in Casablanca.

The North African giants delivered an impressive performance, with Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah once again leading by example. The 33-year-old captain scored two of Egypt’s three goals, bringing his tally to nine goals in what has been a long and grueling qualification campaign that began two years ago.

Egypt took control of the match early on, with Ibrahim Adel opening the scoring in the 8th minute. Salah doubled the lead just six minutes later before sealing the victory with another strike in the 84th minute.

The win gives Egypt an unassailable five-point lead in Group A with one round of fixtures remaining, confirming their qualification for the global tournament.

A Confident Egypt March to North America

Egypt will head into the 2026 World Cup full of belief and momentum. As seven-time Africa Cup of Nations champions, they boast a proud continental record. However, World Cup qualification has historically proven more elusive — this will be just their fifth appearance in the tournament’s history.

Egypt’s World Cup Appearances

(1) 1934 – Italy
Egypt made history as the first African nation to ever play in a FIFA World Cup. Their debut was short-lived, however, as they were eliminated in the Round of 16 after a 4–2 defeat to Hungary in a single-elimination format.

(2) 1990 – Italy
After a 56-year absence, Egypt returned to the global stage. They were drawn in a tough group alongside England, the Republic of Ireland, and the Netherlands. Despite solid performances, Egypt drew two matches and lost one, finishing bottom of their group and failing to advance to the knockout stage.

(3) 2018 – Russia
Led by Mohamed Salah, Egypt qualified for their third World Cup. Unfortunately, their campaign ended in disappointment as they lost all three group matches — Uruguay (0–1), Russia (1–3), and Saudi Arabia (1–2) — finishing last in Group A.

(4) 2026 – North America (USA, Canada & Mexico)
Now, Egypt return to the world stage for a fourth time, determined to make a stronger impression. With Salah in fine form, a solid core of young talents like Ibrahim Adel and Omar Marmoush, and experienced leadership from coach Rui Vitória, the Pharaohs will be aiming to go beyond the group stage for the first time in their history.

As Africa’s most successful national team in continental competitions, Egypt’s qualification for the 2026 World Cup reaffirms their position among the continent’s footballing elites — and fans across Africa will be watching eagerly as the Pharaohs seek to write a new chapter in their storied history.
