Daniel Levy Steps Down as Tottenham Chairman After 25 Years

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the departure of their long-serving executive chairman, Daniel Levy, bringing an end to his remarkable 25-year reign at the North London club.

The announcement, made on the club’s official website on Thursday, September 4, 2025, shocked many within the football world—particularly Spurs supporters who had grown accustomed to Levy’s presence as the face of the club. Levy was the longest-serving chairman in Premier League history, a role in which he often faced criticism for his handling of transfers and managerial appointments.

In a lengthy statement, Spurs paid tribute to the chairman’s transformative impact:

“Tottenham Hotspur has been transformed over the last quarter of a century. It has played in European competitions in 18 of the last 20 seasons, becoming one of the world’s most recognised football clubs, consistently investing in its academy, players and facilities, including a new, world-class stadium and state-of-the-art training centre. The club has also competed regularly at the highest level, enjoying a number of fantastic on-field successes, including the recent Europa League Cup win.”

The club further clarified that no changes would be made to its ownership or shareholder structure, signaling stability despite Levy’s exit.

Levy’s farewell message

Reflecting on his departure, Levy expressed pride in his legacy and gratitude to the club’s community:

“I am incredibly proud of the work I have done together with the executive team and all our employees. We have built this club into a global heavyweight competing at the highest level. More than that, we have built a community. I was lucky enough to work with some of the greatest people in this sport, from the team at Lilywhite House and Hotspur Way to all the players and managers over the years. I wish to thank all the fans who have supported me over the years. It hasn’t always been an easy journey but significant progress has been made. I will continue to support this club passionately.”

Levy’s legacy at Spurs

Levy’s tenure will be remembered for major milestones in Tottenham’s modern history. He oversaw the club’s move from White Hart Lane to the state-of-the-art Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2019, a project that reshaped the club’s financial and commercial strength.

Under his leadership, Spurs also reached their first-ever Champions League final in 2019 under Mauricio Pochettino, though they fell short in a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool.

He was also at the helm when Tottenham finally ended a 17-year trophy drought, adding silverware to the cabinet. However, his final season in charge was marked by disappointment as Spurs endured their worst league finish in nearly two decades, slumping to 17th place.

Levy’s departure closes a defining chapter in Tottenham’s history—one filled with both criticism and commendation. He leaves behind a club with world-class infrastructure and global recognition, but also with questions about what direction Spurs will take next without his influence at the helm.
