Bayer Leverkusen Appoint Kasper Hjulmand as New Head Coach

Bayer Leverkusen have officially announced the appointment of Kasper Hjulmand as the club’s new head coach, following the dismissal of Erik ten Hag earlier this month. The Danish tactician signed a two-year contract on Monday, September 8, 2025, keeping him at the BayArena until the summer of 2027.

Ten Hag’s tenure at Leverkusen came to an abrupt end after less than two months in charge. The former Manchester United boss struggled to settle quickly and was relieved of his duties after a disappointing start to the Bundesliga campaign.

Hjulmand arrives with a strong reputation built largely on his international exploits with the Denmark national team. He famously guided the Danes to the semi-finals of the UEFA Euro 2020 tournament (played in 2021 due to the pandemic), where they narrowly lost to England after extra time. More recently, his Denmark side exited EURO 2024 in the Round of 16 following a 2-0 defeat to Germany.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Hjulmand expressed his enthusiasm for the challenge ahead:

“I have always perceived Bayer 04 as a very well-run, well-structured, and highly ambitious club. This impression has been strengthened over the past few days. It is an honour to be entrusted with such a team. After outstanding successes in the past, I am very motivated by the task of shaping the future of Bayer 04 Leverkusen with both proven and exciting new players.”

The 52-year-old Danish coach is now tasked with stabilizing Leverkusen’s season and reigniting their push for success in both domestic and European competitions. Known for his tactical flexibility, attacking football, and ability to inspire players, Hjulmand will be expected to quickly implement his philosophy and restore confidence in a squad still searching for rhythm.

His debut on the touchline will come this Friday, September 12, 2025, when Leverkusen face Eintracht Frankfurt in a crucial Bundesliga clash. Fans will be eager to see whether Hjulmand can inspire an immediate turnaround as the club seeks its first victory of the season.
