A major transportation disaster has occurred in southern Mexico, where at least 13 people have died and 98 others were injured following a train derailment on Sunday. The incident took place in Asunción Ixtaltepec, Oaxaca, involving the high-profile Interoceanic Train.

According to official reports from the Mexican Navy, there were approximately 250 passengers on board at the time of the accident.

The derailment triggered a massive mobilization of emergency resources. The Navy confirmed that 36 passengers required urgent hospital care for their injuries while the remaining injured individuals sustained minor wounds and were treated on-site. Hundreds of naval personnel and rescue vehicles were deployed to the remote area to assist in the recovery efforts.

In the wake of the crash, Attorney General Ernestina Godoy announced that a formal investigation is being opened to determine the exact cause of the derailment. President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed the nation via social media, stating that the Secretary of the Navy and the Interior Ministry’s Undersecretary for Human Rights have been instructed to travel to the site immediately to provide personal assistance to the victims’ families.

The Interoceanic Train is a relatively new and vital piece of Mexico’s infrastructure managed by the Navy. The train connects Mexico’s Pacific and Gulf coasts, running on a main line between Veracruz and Salina Cruz.

This route only entered service in 2023 as a flagship project aimed at boosting economic development in southern Mexico and positioning the region as a competitive cargo alternative to the Panama Canal.
