On Friday, May 2, 2025, six U.S. federal agencies—including the FBI, DEA, IRS, CIA, Department of State, and U.S. Attorneys’ Offices—are scheduled to release investigation records related to Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

These disclosures stem from a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit filed by American transparency advocate Aaron Greenspan, who sought documents concerning alleged drug-related investigations from the 1990s.21st Century Chronicle+2Sahara Reporters+2Legit.ng – Nigeria news.+2

The U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, presided over by Judge Beryl Howell, ordered the release, stating that the agencies’ previous refusals to confirm or deny the existence of such records were “neither logical nor plausible.”

The court found that both the FBI and DEA had acknowledged investigations involving President Tinubu, thereby invalidating their prior “Glomar” responses, which are refusals to confirm or deny the existence of records.Premium Times Nigeria+3Sahara Reporters+3Legit.ng – Nigeria news.+3Premium Times Nigeria

The FOIA requests also targeted records related to Lee Andrew Edwards, Mueez Abegboyega Akande, and Abiodun Agbele, individuals allegedly associated with a drug trafficking ring in the 1990s.

Court documents indicate that investigations by the FBI, DEA, and IRS linked President Tinubu to financial transactions suspected of involving proceeds from heroin trafficking, leading to a civil forfeiture of funds in 1993.Nairaland+5Sahara Reporters+521st Century Chronicle+5Premium Times Nigeria

President Tinubu has consistently denied any wrongdoing and has not been criminally charged in connection with these allegations. His administration maintains that the forthcoming disclosures will not reveal new information or implicate him in any criminal activity.Legit.ng – Nigeria news.

The anticipated release of these documents has garnered significant attention in both Nigeria and the international community, with observers awaiting the details that will emerge from the declassified records.
