Super Falcons of Nigeria Send Heartfelt Message to South Africa’s Gabriela Salgado Following Successful Surgery

In a touching show of sportsmanship and solidarity, the Super Falcons of Nigeria have issued an official statement expressing their heartfelt support for Gabriela Salgado, the South African winger who suffered a severe injury during the semi-final clash at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Salgado sustained a mid-shaft fracture in her left leg during the intense encounter between Nigeria and South Africa on Tuesday, July 22, 2025—a match that saw the Super Falcons edge out Banyana Banyana with a narrow 2-1 victory.

The injury occurred late in the second half and required immediate medical attention. Salgado was stretchered off the field and later underwent successful surgery at the Mohamed VI University Hospital in Casablanca, Morocco.

According to Banyana Banyana’s team doctor, Dr. Lindi Mokoena, the surgery went smoothly, and Salgado is currently in recovery. While she is expected to be sidelined for the remainder of the year, she will stay with the South African squad until she is medically cleared to travel back home.

“Gabi suffered a mid-shaft fracture in her left leg during the match against Nigeria and has since undergone successful surgery. While she will miss the rest of the year’s football calendar, we’re deeply grateful for the exceptional medical attention she received from our medical team, CAF officials, and the hospital staff,” said Dr. Mokoena.

Super Falcons’ Statement of Support

In response to the news, the Super Falcons released an official statement through team media officer Mary Akinsola, offering words of encouragement and empathy for the injured player.

“The entire Super Falcons of Nigeria family—players, coaches, and support staff—were deeply saddened to hear of the serious injury sustained by Gabriela Salgado during the match. Our immediate thoughts are with her during this difficult time of healing and recovery,” the statement read.

The Super Falcons emphasized that while the intensity of competition is a natural part of the game, it is the shared humanity between athletes that transcends rivalry.

“In moments like these, the spirit of competition fades into the background, giving way to compassion, solidarity, and support. We are holding Gabriela, her teammates, family, and loved ones in our thoughts, and we extend our sincerest wishes for her strength, resilience, and a full recovery,” the statement continued.

“As fellow professionals in the football community, we stand in unity with Banyana Banyana, offering our full support during this time. We look forward to seeing Gabriela Salgado return to the pitch stronger and surrounded by the unwavering support of her team and fans.”

A Shared Respect Beyond the Game

The message from the Super Falcons has been widely applauded by fans and commentators as a sign of mutual respect and solidarity between two of Africa’s top women’s football teams.

While the injury was unfortunate, the warm words from the Nigerian camp highlight the camaraderie that exists within the sport, beyond national and competitive lines.

Salgado is expected to continue her rehabilitation under close medical supervision and is anticipated to rejoin competitive football in 2026.
