Nico Williams reveals why he rejected Barcelona

It was a disappointing day for FC Barcelona fans as rising Spanish star Nico Williams dashed hopes of a move to Camp Nou by committing his long-term future to Athletic Bilbao. The talented winger has officially signed a new 10-year contract with the Basque club, extending his stay until June 30, 2035.

Athletic Bilbao confirmed the news on their official website on Friday, July 4, 2025, bringing an end to weeks of transfer speculation.

The 22-year-old, who had been heavily linked with a high-profile move to Barcelona, was also reportedly on the radar of Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich. However, the winger chose loyalty over glamour, choosing to stay with the club that nurtured his development.

Nico’s previous contract was set to expire in 2027, but the new deal not only secures his services for the next decade—it also significantly raises his release clause. His buyout clause, which was previously believed to be around €62 million (£53 million), has now been increased to nearly £100 million, making any potential future move a much more expensive affair.

When asked why he chose to remain at Athletic Bilbao despite interest from European giants, Nico gave a heartfelt response rooted in loyalty and personal connection.

“When it comes to making decisions, for me the most important thing is to listen to your heart,” he said. “I am where I want to be, with my people. This is my home.”

Nico Williams has already made a significant impact at the club, scoring 31 goals in 167 appearances. His contributions were instrumental in Athletic Bilbao’s impressive fourth-place finish in La Liga last season, which secured them a coveted spot in the 2025–26 UEFA Champions League.

On the international stage, Nico also had a stellar campaign with Spain, helping them clinch the UEFA Euro 2024 title. He notably scored in the final—a thrilling 2-1 victory over England—cementing his status as one of Europe’s brightest young talents.

With his future now firmly tied to Athletic Bilbao, Nico Williams is set to become a central figure in the club’s long-term ambitions, much to the delight of the Bilbao faithful—and the frustration of suitors like Barcelona.
