Manchester United criticised for not signing new Arsenal and Newcastle stars

Charlie Nicholas has voiced his concerns over Manchester United’s transfer strategy this summer, questioning why the club overlooked two key signings made by Premier League rivals Arsenal and Newcastle United.
Following Manchester United’s dismal 2024/25 campaign—where they finished a disappointing 15th in the league—new manager Ruben Amorim called for urgent reinforcements.
So far, the Red Devils have spent over £120 million on Matheus Cunha from Wolves and Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford, while also bringing in teenage left-back Diego Leon, who is seen as a long-term prospect rather than an immediate contributor.
However, Nicholas remains unimpressed with United’s summer business and expressed confusion as to why they didn’t pursue players like Christian Norgaard, who joined Arsenal for £15 million from Brentford, or Aaron Ramsdale, who moved to Newcastle on loan from Southampton.

Speaking to Sky Bet, Nicholas said, “There’s a long list of players out there who I believe are better than what United currently have. I just don’t understand the direction the club is heading in. Why didn’t they move for someone like Norgaard? He’s experienced, consistent, and was available for a reasonable fee.”
He continued, “Instead of gambling on just two high-profile signings, United could have disrupted the market more—looked at players from clubs like Bournemouth or Newcastle, added depth and quality. Their defensive issues remain, and I don’t understand what’s going on with their goalkeeping situation. Why not go for Ramsdale? He’s proven, English, and brings competitiveness to the squad. Yes, he hasn’t won much, but neither have United in recent years.”
Nicholas also commented on Arsenal’s acquisition of Norgaard, calling it a “fabulous signing,” though he admitted the Danish midfielder may face limited game time at the Emirates due to fierce competition from players like Declan Rice, Martín Zubimendi, and Martin Ødegaard.
“Norgaard is a smart replacement for Jorginho,” Nicholas noted. “It’s a big leap from Brentford to Arsenal, and while he may not be a regular starter, he adds quality, balance, and drive. At just £15 million, it’s a bargain and could prove to be an excellent piece of business if he adapts well.”
Overall, Nicholas believes Manchester United’s lack of strategic vision in the market could further disconnect them from their fan base, stating, “There’s no clear sign of improvement or excitement, and if this continues, supporters may turn on the club once again.”
