Eight prisoners handed life sentences turn UK prison into a 10-hour war zone
Shower gel and shampoo were among the unlikely tools used by a group of convicted k!llers to seize control of a high-security prison wing at HMP Whitemoor in Cambridgeshire.
For around 10 hours in October 2022, eight inmates staged a violent mutiny, refusing to return to their cells after lunch and forcing authorities to deploy an elite national response team to regain control.
The prisoners poured oil, shower gel and shampoo across the landing corridor floor, making it too slippery for officers to safely enter. They overturned furniture to form barricades at the top of a staircase and created makeshift riot gear, including improvised helmets to shield themselves from Pava spray and pyrotechnic devices.
Armed with broken table legs and kettles, the group maintained a defiant standoff throughout the afternoon before retreating to the cell of one of the inmates, Korie Hassan, where they barricaded themselves in for a final stand. Control of the wing was eventually restored at about 10pm when officers restrained the prisoners.
The eight men have now been handed additional jail terms at Cambridge Crown Court, with the final sentence delivered on February 20.
The sentences are as follows:
