Luka Modrić Joins AC Milan on Free Transfer After Illustrious Real Madrid Career

Veteran midfielder Luka Modrić has officially completed his move to AC Milan as a free agent, marking the end of a legendary chapter at Real Madrid and the beginning of a new challenge in Serie A.

The Rossoneri confirmed the signing via an official statement on their website on Monday, July 14, 2025, announcing that the 39-year-old Croatian international has signed a one-year contract, which will keep him at San Siro until June 30, 2026, with the option to extend for an additional year until June 30, 2027.

“AC Milan is delighted to announce that Luka Modrić has signed a contract with the club until 30 June 2026, with an option for a one-year extension until 30 June 2027,” the club’s statement read.

A Career Full of Glory

Modrić arrives in Milan as one of the most accomplished footballers of his generation. After joining Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012, he spent 13 seasons at the Santiago Bernabéu, becoming the most decorated player in the club’s history. His trophy cabinet includes an incredible 28 titles, highlighted by:

  • 6 UEFA Champions League titles

  • 4 La Liga titles

  • 5 FIFA Club World Cups

  • 4 UEFA Super Cups

In total, Modrić made 597 appearances for Los Blancos, scoring 43 goals and orchestrating play from midfield with elegance, vision, and leadership. His final match for the Spanish giants came just last week in their 4–0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup.

A New Chapter in Italy

As he prepares to don the iconic red and black stripes of Milan, Modrić is expected to provide not only technical brilliance but also invaluable experience to a relatively youthful AC Milan squad. His arrival signals Milan’s ambition to strengthen their midfield and mount a strong challenge in both domestic and European competitions.

Though approaching 40, the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner continues to defy age with his fitness, tactical intelligence, and passing mastery—traits that will undoubtedly serve Milan well in the coming season.
