Bashir El-Rufai: Peter Obi’s Massive Youth Appeal Poses a Significant Threat to Atiku Ahead of 2027
Bashir El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, has asserted that Peter Obi’s growing popularity and unwavering grassroots support present a formidable challenge to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the 2027 general election draws closer.
In a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday, Bashir acknowledged Atiku’s enduring political relevance, describing him as “a force to be reckoned with” in the upcoming polls. He admitted that many believed Atiku’s strongest opportunity to clinch the presidency was in 2019, but suggested that 2027 might still present a defining moment for the veteran politician.
“Atiku is a force to be reckoned with,” he wrote. “He also feels the stars have finally aligned in his favor. And although 2019 is thought to have been his best shot, this may be one of those ‘moment meets the man’ scenarios.”
However, Bashir warned that Atiku’s path to Aso Rock is far from guaranteed, citing Peter Obi’s immense youth support and cult-like following as a significant hurdle. He emphasized Obi’s unique appeal among younger Nigerians as a powerful political force that could upend traditional voting patterns.
He added humorously, “Obi as a flag bearer with a strong Northern candidate would defeat Pablo on Election Day before our dear mother of the Nation, Aunty Remi, finishes his breakfast around 12 noon,” implying that Obi’s ticket could deliver a swift and decisive victory against the opposition.
The remarks underscore the rising influence of Peter Obi, particularly among youth and first-time voters, and the evolving dynamics within Nigeria’s political landscape as the race toward 2027 intensifies.
