Victor Boniface Announces Shock Retirement from Super Eagles—Then Deletes Post

Bayer Leverkusen forward Victor Boniface has made headlines after announcing his retirement from the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles, following a friendly match against Russia.

Boniface took to his official Instagram account on Friday, June 6, 2025, to share the surprising news. He wrote:

“Proud to play for my country and a dream for me also. Really enjoyed every moment, the good and the bad. Thanks a lot. Thank you all. I do hang boot.”

The announcement came shortly after he was substituted in the 61st minute of the match for Toluwase Arokodare, who later scored the equaliser that saved Nigeria from defeat.

Boniface’s recent performances for the national team have drawn criticism from fans, many of whom have been disappointed with his form since donning the green and white jersey.

However, in a twist that has left many confused, the striker—known for his playful and often cryptic social media presence—deleted the retirement post not long after publishing it. This has sparked speculation as to whether the announcement was genuine or simply a light-hearted outburst.

Despite his strong club performances for Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen, Boniface is yet to score for the Super Eagles. Since making his debut in a 6–0 win over São Tomé and Príncipe in September 2023—where he assisted Samuel Chukwueze’s goal—he has earned eight caps without finding the back of the net.

As of now, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has not issued any statement regarding Boniface’s status with the national team. Fans remain divided, unsure whether to treat his “retirement” as official or just another social media moment gone viral.
