U.S. Military planning for possible weeks-long war against Iran once Trump gives the order

The U.S. military is drawing up plans for a potential sustained campaign against Iran that could last several weeks if Donald Trump orders an attack, according to two U.S. officials familiar with the discussions, a report by Reuters has revealed.

The preparations suggest the situation could escalate into a far more serious conflict than past clashes between the two nations.

Officials said the planning goes beyond limited strikes on nuclear facilities and could encompass broader targets across Iran’s state and security infrastructure. U.S. forces already deployed in the Middle East continue to be reinforced with additional troops, fighter aircraft, guided-missile destroyers and a second aircraft carrier.

The buildup comes as diplomats from both countries pursue negotiations aimed at resolving longstanding disputes over Iran’s nuclear programme, with envoys set to meet in Geneva soon under mediation. Even so, U.S. officials acknowledge that reaching a deal remains challenging, and they fully expect Tehran to retaliate if military action begins. Such retaliation could trigger a cycle of strikes and reprisals with wider regional implications.

Inside the U.S. government, Trump has emphasized that all options remain under consideration, with the White House stating he will make decisions based on national security needs. The Pentagon has reportedly declined to comment on specifics about the operational planning.

Experts warn a prolonged campaign carries greater risk to U.S. forces, given Iran’s substantial missile arsenal and strategic depth, increasing the likelihood of a broader conflict in the region if combat unfolds.
