Donald Trump Keeps Targeting Kamala Harris with “Kambala” Nickname
Donald Trump has alleged that some internal communications from his campaign have been hacked, pointing the finger at the Iranian government and referencing the longstanding tensions between his administration and Iran.
Following a report from the news website Politico, which disclosed that it had begun receiving emails in July from an anonymous source offering genuine documents from within Trump’s campaign—one of which detailed potential vulnerabilities related to running mate JD Vance—the Republican party’s campaign issued a statement.
According to the Trump campaign, these documents were obtained illegally from foreign adversaries, with the intention of disrupting the upcoming 2024 election and creating disorder within the democratic process.
Trump’s campaign spokesperson, Steven Cheung, emphasized the seriousness of the situation and reiterated Trump’s commitment to countering threats from Iran, suggesting that the Iranian government is aware of Trump’s resolve to combat their activities, as he had done during his first term in office.
On Saturday night, Trump took to his Truth Social app to announce that Microsoft had informed his campaign of a recent hack by Iran on one of its websites. He accused Iran of being able to access only publicly available information but did not provide further details about the hacking incident.
The Trump campaign also referenced a report from Microsoft researchers indicating that hackers linked to the Iranian government had attempted to infiltrate the account of a “high-ranking official” associated with a U.S. presidential campaign back in June.
According to the report, the hackers had taken control of an account belonging to a former political advisor and used it to target a high-ranking official in Trump’s campaign.
In response to these allegations, Iran’s permanent mission to the United Nations in New York stated via email that the Iranian government does not possess any intention or motive to interfere in the U.S. presidential election. The mission dismissed the claims made by the Trump campaign, expressing a lack of belief in such reports.
On Friday, following Microsoft’s findings, Iran’s U.N. mission reiterated to Reuters that its cyber capabilities are strictly defensive and proportional to the threats the country faces, emphasizing that it has no intentions of launching cyberattacks.
During his time in office, Trump maintained strained relations with Iran, notably ordering the assassination of Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani in 2020 and withdrawing the United States from a multilateral nuclear agreement with Iran.
Trump survived an assassination attempt in July. While there have been no suggestions that the suspect was linked to Iran, last month it was reported that the U.S. had intelligence about an Iranian plot against Trump. Iran has denied such charges.
