Tobi Amusan Calls Out Athletics Federation of Nigeria Over Poor Kits Ahead of World Championships
Reigning 100m hurdles champion and current World Champion, Tobi Amusan, has openly criticized the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) over the quality of competition kits sent to her ahead of the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
Amusan, who is one of Nigeria’s most decorated athletes, expressed her disappointment through a video shared on her Snapchat account on Friday, September 14, 2025. In the clip, she lamented the poor treatment Nigerian athletes continue to face, especially when compared to their counterparts from other countries, noting that the situation has become both frustrating and embarrassing.
What Did Tobi Amusan Say About the Kits?
Speaking with visible displeasure, Amusan revealed that she would be forced to compete in an adidas black tight instead of an official national kit due to the poor provision from the AFN. She said:
“As it is now, I have to wear an adidas black tight. I go show you wetin Jamaica. When I tell you say Jamaica is in the same WhatsApp group with Nigeria, but dem no worse like Nigeria. Nigeria, all the other countries give their athletes two kits. See wetin Nigeria pack give us. This country (Nigeria) is really embarrassing.”
Her statement highlights the ongoing neglect and lack of proper preparation that Nigerian athletes often face on the international stage.
Self-Sponsored Efforts and Determination
It is not the first time Amusan has faced such challenges. Reports reveal that she has personally funded most of her trips to international competitions due to inadequate support from the Nigerian government. As the 2025 World Athletics Championships draw closer, Amusan remains focused on defending the title she won in 2022 in the women’s 100m hurdles, where she set a world record of 12.12 seconds — a moment that placed Nigeria firmly on the global athletics map.
