The death toll from the devastating flash floods that struck central Texas has now surpassed 100, with 11 individuals still reported missing. Among those unaccounted for are 10 young girls and a counselor from Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp for girls located in the Texas Hill Country.
The floods hit suddenly on Friday, unleashing chaos and destruction across the region, particularly in Kerr County. Torrential rains swelled the Guadalupe River before dawn on what was meant to be a joyful July Fourth holiday. The force of the floodwaters caught many by surprise, sweeping away buildings, vehicles, and entire communities.
Rescue teams have been working tirelessly, navigating treacherous terrain and mud-choked riverbanks in a desperate bid to locate survivors. However, hopes have begun to wane as the search stretches into its fourth day, with continued rainfall and new thunderstorms forecasted to hit the already devastated region.
Camp Mystic confirmed that at least 27 campers and staff members are among the deceased. The camp community is reeling from the loss, with a statement released on Monday expressing the depth of their grief: “Our hearts are broken alongside our families that are enduring this unimaginable tragedy.”
Tragically, Richard Eastland, 70, the camp’s co-owner and longtime director, also perished in the flood. According to the Austin American-Statesman, Eastland died heroically while attempting to rescue children from the rising waters. Local pastor Del Way, a family friend, told the BBC, “The whole community will miss him. He died a hero.”
Kerr County officials have reported that at least 84 of the victims—56 adults and 28 children—died in the area. The sheriff’s office has stated that 22 adults and 10 children have yet to be formally identified due to the conditions and scale of the disaster.
Meanwhile, the White House has pushed back against criticism suggesting that budget cuts to the National Weather Service (NWS) may have affected the agency’s ability to issue timely warnings. The NWS office responsible for the region had five staff members on duty Thursday night—standard staffing for an overnight shift when severe weather is anticipated.
Nonetheless, critics of the Trump administration have pointed to the broader implications of staffing reductions at the NWS’s parent agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), arguing that such cuts may weaken the nation’s preparedness and response to extreme weather events.
The National Weather Service has issued updated forecasts warning of additional slow-moving thunderstorms, which could exacerbate the already catastrophic flooding and hamper ongoing recovery efforts.
As communities across Texas grieve and search operations continue, officials urge residents to remain vigilant and heed weather advisories as more rainfall is expected in the days ahead.
“That was an act of God,” she told a daily briefing on Monday.
“It’s not the administration’s fault that the flood-hit when it did, but there were early and consistent warnings and, again, the National Weather Service did its job.”
She outlined that the NWS office in Austin-San Antonio conducted briefings for local officials on the eve of the flood and sent out a flood watch that afternoon, before issuing numerous flood warnings that night and in the pre-dawn hours of 4 July.
