A 42-year-old man faces charges of terrorism and assault with intent to murder after stabbing 11 shoppers at a Walmart in Traverse City, Michigan, U.S.

The suspect, identified as Bradford James Gille, attacked five men and six women with a folding knife on Saturday afternoon. Victims ranged in age from 21 to 84 and are all expected to survive. Gille is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday or Tuesday.

Authorities said the stabbings were random, and no motive has yet been determined. However, a terrorism charge was applied because the mass attack appeared intended to spread fear and harm within the community.

Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea told reporters officers arrived at the store two minutes after the first emergency call. Bystanders, including an armed citizen, confronted the suspect in the parking lot, preventing further violence. A deputy then took Gille into custody without incident.

Investigators, with assistance from the FBI, are conducting interviews to uncover the suspect’s motive.

Munson Healthcare confirmed all victims were treated at its regional hospital, with six in critical condition and five in serious condition.

Walmart condemned the violence, calling it unacceptable, and thanked first responders for their swift action. FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said federal agents are supporting local authorities.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed sympathy for the victims and the community affected by the attack. Traverse City is located about 255 miles northwest of Detroit.
