Scotland Releases 500 Inmates to Ease Prison Overcrowding

The Scottish government has released over 500 inmates to address prison overcrowding.

Prisons across the UK face a crisis, with governors in England and Wales warning of imminent space shortages.

On Wednesday, June 26, the SNP government in Edinburgh initiated the early release of over 500 Scottish inmates serving short-term sentences.

Inmates with less than four years to serve and 180 days or fewer remaining will be released in waves across all Scottish prisons. Sex offenders and domestic abusers are exempt, with governors having veto power.

Victim Support Scotland expressed concerns about reoffending. Chief executive Kate Wallace stated, “The last time this happened, over 40% reoffended within six months, creating more victims. We expect similar outcomes, with victims worried about their safety and some inmates using their release as a coercive control tool.”

The Scottish Prison Service emphasized safety. A spokesman said, “Governors, with police and social work intelligence, have vetoed anyone posing an immediate risk.”

The Prison Governors’ Association (PGA) claims police may struggle to detain people due to limited prison space.
