Sánchez exit looms? Chelsea consider other goalkeeper options

Chelsea Eye Mike Maignan as Potential Successor to Robert Sánchez Amid Contract Uncertainty at AC Milan

Chelsea Football Club are reportedly exploring options to bolster their goalkeeping department ahead of the June 2025 transfer window, with a strong focus on French international and AC Milan shot-stopper, Mike Maignan.

The Premier League side is said to have made an official enquiry to AC Milan, signalling their interest in securing Maignan as a potential replacement for current first-choice goalkeeper, Robert Sánchez.

Sources indicate that Chelsea have long admired the 28-year-old, who has established himself as one of Europe’s most reliable and technically gifted goalkeepers. With contract talks between Maignan and Milan currently stalled, the situation at the San Siro has raised concerns over his long-term future, prompting Chelsea to intensify their interest.

Although no deal has been agreed, the Blues are understood to be closely monitoring developments in Italy. The club has reportedly made initial contact with AC Milan to gauge the feasibility of a transfer should Maignan remain unwilling to commit to a new deal.

Chelsea’s interest is described as serious, and they are believed to be prepared to make a strong offer should an opportunity arise.

Maignan, who has earned widespread acclaim for his composure, leadership, and exceptional shot-stopping ability, has been instrumental in Milan’s domestic and European campaigns. His prowess in distribution and ability to command the box have made him a standout figure in Serie A and a mainstay in France’s national team setup.

Despite having Robert Sánchez and Djordje Petrović in their current squad, Chelsea are reportedly evaluating their options in goal with a view to bringing in a more experienced and consistently high-performing presence ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Maignan fits that profile perfectly, and his availability could present a valuable opportunity for the West London club to reinforce a critical position.

The onus now lies with AC Milan, who must decide whether to re-open talks with Maignan to secure his future or entertain Chelsea’s growing interest. If the deadlock in negotiations persists, a high-profile transfer battle could be on the horizon, with Chelsea positioning themselves as serious contenders for the goalkeeper’s signature.
