Robert Sanchez sends message to Chelsea supporters

Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper, Robert Sánchez, has issued an apology to the club’s fans following his early dismissal in the Premier League clash against Manchester United.

The Spaniard was shown a straight red card in the fifth minute of the game after a foul on Bryan Mbeumo just outside the penalty area. The challenge was deemed to have denied a clear goalscoring opportunity, leaving Chelsea to play with 10 men for almost the entire match.

Taking to his official Instagram account after the game, Sánchez expressed regret for the incident and acknowledged the effort of his teammates.

“On me today guys, big sorry for that. The team put in a massive effort in the second half but couldn’t get there,” he wrote.

The sending-off was significant not just for the match but also historically. Sánchez became the earliest Chelsea player ever to be sent off in a Premier League game. In the history of the competition, only two other goalkeepers have been dismissed earlier in a match, underlining how rare the incident was.

Chelsea supporters were also reminded of a similar situation involving club legend Petr Čech, who was sent off in a past Premier League fixture after fouling a Wigan Athletic player, leading to a penalty.

How many games will Robert Sánchez miss?

Following his red card, Sánchez will serve a suspension. He is set to miss Chelsea’s Carabao Cup tie against Lincoln City on Tuesday, but the good news for fans is that he will be eligible to return for next weekend’s Premier League clash against his former club, Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Blues, under Enzo Maresca, have endured a mixed start to the season, picking up just eight points from their first five league fixtures. The absence of their first-choice goalkeeper, even briefly, adds to the challenges facing the squad as they try to build momentum.

Chelsea fans will now be looking to see how the team responds in the Carabao Cup without Sánchez and whether his return against Brighton can help steady the defense and boost their push up the table.
