Renowned Drummer Gerry Conway Passes Away at 76 – Gerry Conway, a celebrated drummer renowned for his contributions to Fairport Convention and the broader folk-rock community, has passed away at the age of 76.
Conway’s journey in the music world was marked by his remarkable talent and versatility. He was diagnosed with motor neurone disease two years ago and sadly succumbed to the illness on Saturday, March 29.
Born in Norfolk and raised in London, Conway co-founded the band Eclection alongside Trevor Lucas in 1968. This collaboration led him to become a pivotal member of Fotheringay, which was Sandy Denny’s band following her time with Fairport Convention.
Beyond his notable affiliations with these iconic groups, Conway was highly sought after as a session drummer. Throughout the 1970s, he showcased his musical prowess by contributing to a diverse range of albums. His impressive list of collaborations includes works with artists such as Iain Matthews, John Cale, Steeleye Span, Mike McGear, Shelagh McDonald, Al Stewart, and Sandy Denny.
One of Conway’s most enduring partnerships was with Cat Stevens, now known as Yusuf Islam. Their collaboration began with the 1971 album “Teaser And The Firecat” and continued until the end of the decade, spanning several significant releases in Stevens’ illustrious career.
