R. Kelly Reportedly Hospitalized After Alleged Medication Overdose in Federal Prison, Legal Team Demands Emergency Release

R&B singer R. Kelly was allegedly hospitalized last week after suffering what his attorney describes as a near-fatal overdose of prescription medication administered by staff at the federal correctional facility where he is currently serving a 30-year sentence.

According to new court filings submitted on Monday, June 16, 2025, by his lawyer Beau B. Brindley, the 57-year-old singer was ordered by a solitary confinement officer at the North Carolina prison to take an excessive dose of his prescribed medication on the night of June 12. The following morning, Kelly reportedly awoke disoriented, feeling dizzy and weak. He allegedly collapsed while attempting to stand, then crawled to his cell door before losing consciousness.

Kelly was subsequently rushed to Duke University Hospital, where doctors are said to have confirmed he had been given a dangerously high amount of medication — a dosage his attorney claims could have been fatal. While undergoing medical evaluation, Kelly was also allegedly diagnosed with serious blood clots in both his legs and lungs, a potentially life-threatening condition.

However, the singer’s legal team contends that prison authorities denied him a recommended surgical procedure and prematurely discharged him from the hospital against medical advice. Kelly was returned to solitary confinement despite his fragile state, a move his lawyer calls reckless and inhumane.

Citing the incident as further evidence of deteriorating conditions and ongoing threats to the singer’s life, Brindley renewed his call for a court-approved temporary release to home confinement. The motion warns that without immediate and appropriate medical intervention, R. Kelly’s life may be at grave risk.

Federal prosecutors, however, have strongly pushed back, dismissing the claims as yet another manipulative tactic by the disgraced singer to gain public sympathy and sway legal proceedings. They also pointed out that the motion was submitted to a court that currently lacks jurisdiction over his case, characterizing the filing as legally meaningless and theatrically driven.

This latest episode adds to a growing list of serious allegations by Kelly’s defense team, including previous claims of an alleged assassination plot against him by members of the Aryan Brotherhood gang inside the prison.

Kelly, who was convicted in 2022 of multiple charges including sex trafficking, racketeering, and exploitation of minors, continues to maintain that he is being targeted and denied proper medical care while incarcerated.
