Nigerians react to the crowning of a 28-year-old white South African as Miss SA 2024

Nigerians have expressed their reactions following the crowning of Mia Le Roux, a model of European descent, as Miss South Africa 2024.

Le Roux, whose ancestry traces back to Dutch settlers, is not only a marketing manager and model but also a part-time BCom marketing student.

Born in Sasolburg, Free State, and raised in Oudtshoorn, the 28-year-old South African was diagnosed with profound hearing loss at just one year old and currently resides in Rosebank, Cape Town.

She won an impressive R1 million in cash along with a brand-new Mercedes-Benz CLE Coupe during the glamorous ceremony held at the SunBet Arena at Times Square in Pretoria on Saturday, August 10.

This event took place just days after South Africa-born Chidimma Adetshina, who has Nigerian and Mozambican heritage, withdrew from the competition amid a significant controversy surrounding her nationality.

Chidimma faced extensive scrutiny, with social media buzzing with allegations of xenophobia and bullying directed at her after she advanced to the finals.

Many South Africans, including government officials, questioned her citizenship. This week, the national Department of Home Affairs announced findings suggesting that her mother may have committed identity fraud.

In the wake of the Miss SA organization’s announcement, Nigerians took to social media to share their thoughts, resulting in a wide range of comments that were humorous, angry, and sarcastic.

Notable social media personality Omojuwa remarked, “A true South African, in name, image, and identity. Congratulations to Mia Le Roux.

A fitting end to an extraordinary competition.” Another user, Tomi, commented, “Congratulations to her. Now, when I think of the epitome of beauty among South African women, I will think of a white woman.”

Conversely, a South African user lamented, “A black African girl hounded out of a competition only for it to be won by a European. The jokes write themselves.” Meanwhile, another user shared a photo of Nelson Mandela with the caption, “27 wasted years.”
