A Nigerian man has been jailed in the UK for violently assaulting and raping a woman, leading her to jump from a window to escape.

Oladip Oshodi, 48, from Dagenham, East London, was sentenced to 25 years at Snaresbrook Crown Court on July 5, 2024, for two counts of rape, administering a noxious substance, threats to kill, grievous bodily harm, and controlling coercive behavior.

Oshodi was arrested on July 12, 2023, by detectives from the Met’s East Area Public Protection Unit and remained in custody throughout the proceedings. He was convicted of all charges on May 10, 2024.

On the evening of July 11, 2023, Oshodi made sexual advances toward a woman he knew at his home in Dagenham. Despite her clear refusal, he raped her twice and beat her. The victim escaped by jumping from a ground-floor window, collapsing in the street. Concerned bystanders called the police and helped her to safety.

She received treatment at the hospital and support from specialist officers.

Detective Constable Serena McGhee stated, “Oshodi is a dangerous man, and it is right that he will now serve a long sentence. I commend the bravery of the victim and the witnesses in this case. Oshodi showed no remorse, and I am pleased he has been held accountable.”

PC Kayleigh Grafton, a specialist officer for sexual offense victims, added, “The survivor in this case was fleeing for her life. I hope this sentence encourages other women who have been victims of sexual offenses to come forward. We are here to support you and keep you safe.”
