While Season 1’s tightly wrapped storyline seemed complete in itself, Netflix and Brad Pitt’s production company, Plan B Entertainment, are now exploring a fresh “next iteration” of the series.

According to Deadline, Netflix and Plan B are currently in early discussions about crafting a new installment that could serve as Season 2. Plan B co-presidents Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner confirmed that if the project moves forward, director Philip Barantini is expected to return at the helm—setting the stage for another raw and provocative chapter in the Adolescence universe.

Plan B co-president Dede Gardner shed some light on the creative direction, explaining that the team’s goal for the next chapter is to “widen the aperture, stay true to its DNA, [and] not be repetitive.” While she stopped short of revealing any concrete plot details, her statement suggests that Season 2 may branch out into new territory—possibly with new characters and themes—while preserving the show’s emotional intensity and bold storytelling.

Meanwhile, Jeremy Kleiner, also a co-president at Plan B, expressed hope that original co-creators Stephen Graham and Jack Thorne would return for the second season, although nothing has been officially confirmed. Their creative partnership was central to the vision and authenticity of Season 1, and their return could be key to maintaining the show’s distinct voice.

Will the One-Take Format Return?

One of the most talked-about elements of Adolescence was its groundbreaking use of the single-take format—each episode unfolding in real-time without a single visible cut. This immersive approach amplified the tension and emotional weight of the story, making it impossible for viewers to “look away.”

Though Gardner and Kleiner haven’t confirmed whether the same technique will be used in Season 2, Gardner emphasized how crucial the format was to the show’s message and impact:

“Phil’s style of doing the episodes in one take is not a gimmick. It’s very much in conversation with the subject matter. In early conversations with Stephen and Jack, they were talking about how it’s too easy to look away. You can look away from the school, you can look away from the police station, you can look away from the counseling, you can look away from the family. In that kind of prismatic way of viewing, you can duck the issue. So our theory was, what would happen if you couldn’t look away? And will that make the subject embed in you in a different way? That was a thrilling thing.”

If director Philip Barantini returns, as is currently expected, there’s a strong chance that the one-take style—or at least elements of it—will continue to be part of the show’s DNA.
