A mother and son were reportedly discovered mummified inside a Brooklyn apartment after residents reported a troubling smell from the building for days.

The 80-year-old woman and 52-year-old man were discovered by officers who entered the building on the corner of Jay Street and Tillary Street in Downtown Brooklyn for a wellness check just before 1 p.m., according to the NYPD.

The unidentified pair were both found unresponsive, face-up, and their bodies appeared to have been mummified, according to sources.

EMS pronounced them de@d on the scene, authorities said.

The two bodies were removed from the premises by 7:35 p.m. The Post reported.

“That’s actually nasty. I can smell it as soon as I walk out of the elevator. Almost taste it,” a police officer exiting the building said of the horrifying stench coming from the apartment.

The son lived nearby, but not in the home with his mother, the building’s doorman, who wished not to be identified, told The Post.

“The son always used to come here to take care of his mother,” the doorman said. “I haven’t seen him for maybe two or three weeks.”

A neighbor across the hall from where the bodies were found noted that the smell of decomposition had been drifting out of the unit “for days.”

“It would come in waves, and the maintenance would spray like an air freshener,” the neighbor, who also asked not to be identified, recalled.

“I just thought it was coming from the trash outside, but it got worse.”

The city medical examiner will determine the mother and son’s cause of death, police said.

There was no apparent trauma to the bodies, and no criminality is suspected as of now, authorities added.
