“A heated argument erupted between the Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, and members of the House of Representatives Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development on Tuesday, July 9, regarding alleged corruption in her ministry.

The committee had summoned the Minister and her team to appear and respond to allegations of diverting N1.5 billion meant for paying contractors. Some contractors had complained to the committee about not receiving payment for executed contracts.

The hearing, initially cordial, escalated into a shouting match as committee members and the Minister traded accusations.

The Committee chairman, Kalifat Ogbara, asked, ‘Was the budget allocated for 2023 from the accountant-general’s office transferred to the ministry of women affairs? Yes or no?’

Marie Ebikake, another committee member, implied that the Minister was excluding ministry staff from decision-making.

‘Fortunately, I attended the last meeting, and when we placed you under oath, it was to ensure honesty. Today, you’ve strayed. I take offense. I won’t accept these allegations. I’m not subservient to anyone. She should retract what she said about me. This isn’t fair. It’s a trap, but I won’t fall for it. I fear nothing… nothing!’ Kennedy-Ohanenye responded.

The Minister was also interrupted by the committee chairperson, who advised her not to interrupt while an ‘honourable member’ was speaking.

The exchange continued for some time.”
