Michael Okpara University shuts down indefinitely after Protest – The authorities of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, have declared an indefinite closure of the institution due to a student protest.
On Tuesday, Feb. 6, some students expressed their discontent over a tuition fee hike. They claimed that the institution’s authorities expelled them from examination halls for not paying the increased fees, as depicted in a video circulating online.
Unfortunately, the protest was reportedly infiltrated by troublemakers who vandalized the university’s properties, including an attack on the Vice Chancellor’s official vehicle and other officials.
In response to the unrest, Prof. Maduebibisi Iwe, the Vice Chancellor, announced the indefinite suspension of academic activities at the university. The statement emphasized the need to protect life and property on campus, leading to the decision to shut down the university indefinitely.
The university management instructed all students to promptly vacate the premises by no later than 5:00 pm on Tuesday, February 6, 2024.
