Matthew Perry to Receive Honorary Recognition at 2024 Bafta TV Awards

Matthew Perry to Receive Honorary Recognition at 2024 Bafta TV Awards – Friends actor Matthew Perry, who was notably absent from the in memoriam segment at Sunday’s British Academy of Film and Television Arts (Bafta) film awards, will receive posthumous recognition at the organisation’s TV awards ceremony in May.

The decision to honor Perry comes after Ted Lasso actress Hannah Waddingham performed the in memoriam segment at the Bafta film awards, which included tributes to several stars but omitted the late actor.

Responding to inquiries on social media regarding Perry’s absence, the Bafta official account assured fans that Matthew Perry would be remembered in this year’s TV Awards ceremony.

The Bafta website’s in memoriam section acknowledges Perry’s contributions, stating that his fame from Friends led to film opportunities, including notable works such as “Fools Rush In” (1997), “The Whole Nine Yards” (2000), its sequel “The Whole Ten Yards” (2004), and “17 Again” (2009).

In addition to Matthew Perry, TV director Roy Battersby will also be honored at the May ceremony. This decision follows a public appeal from actress Kate Beckinsale, Battersby’s stepdaughter, who advocated for his inclusion in the in memoriam segment.

Battersby, a renowned director who received the Alan Clarke Award for outstanding contribution to television in 1996, passed away in January at the age of 87. His notable work includes contributions to crime series such as Cracker, Between The Lines, Inspector Morse, A Touch Of Frost, and the Tim Roth-starring BBC drama King Of The Ghetto.

A Bafta spokesman acknowledged Battersby as a “renowned and trailblazing director” and expressed condolences for his passing.

The statement confirmed that he would be honored in the forthcoming Bafta television awards in May, and his inclusion in the in memoriam section on the Bafta website was also assured.

The Bafta film awards ceremony on Sunday saw Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” named best film, sweeping awards for best director, best actor, and best supporting actor.
